Ejector Pumps vs. Sump Pumps

The short answer

A sump pump moves groundwater that collects at the footing and pushes it outside the house. An ejector pump moves sewage and waste water from below-grade plumbing up into the sewer line, and that is a licensed plumber's scope. Both sit in floor pits with similar lids, which is why the wrong trade gets called.

The two pumps look alike and do opposite jobs. A sump pump sits in an open pit fed by drain tile and gravel, takes in clean groundwater that has traveled through the soil to the footing, and lifts it out through a discharge line to the yard. An ejector pump sits in a sealed, vented basin fed by pipes, takes in whatever a below-grade toilet, shower or laundry sends it, grinds or passes the solids, and pushes that up into the building sewer. Different source, different destination, different trade.

Chicago basements make this confusing on purpose. A huge share of the housing stock here has a basement bathroom or a laundry below the sewer line, so two pits in one floor is normal, not unusual. Add a retrofit sump installed decades after the house was built and the pits can end up ten feet apart with matching lids. Roughly one call a week comes to us for what turns out to be a plumbing failure, and we say so on the phone rather than after a truck roll. What does a sump pump actually do?

A sump pump is the end of a drainage system, not a plumbing fixture. Everything it moves arrived through soil, not through a pipe inside your house.

Follow one storm from the gutter to the yard and the role is obvious.

  1. Water reaches the footing

    Rain and snowmelt soak down through the clay beside the wall until they hit the footing, which is the lowest point they can easily reach. That is where hydrostatic pressure builds against the slab edge and the cove joint.

  2. Drain tile intercepts it

    Perforated pipe bedded in washed stone at the footing collects that water before it can rise onto the floor. The pipe is pitched so everything it gathers runs downhill toward one place.

  3. The pit collects the flow

    That one place is the sump pit, an open basin set into the slab with holes in its sides and gravel around it. It is deliberately open, because groundwater arrives from the soil rather than from a fixture.

  4. The float starts the pump

    As the pit fills, a float rises and closes the switch. The pump lifts the water up through a check valve and out of the building. In a wet Chicago spring that cycle can repeat every few minutes for days.

  5. The discharge carries it away

    The line has to release that water far enough from the house that it does not simply soak back down to the footing. Ten feet away and falling is the working minimum on the lots we work on.

Signs you are looking at a sump pit

  • A loose or vented lid you can lift by hand
  • Gravel visible around the basin, water seeping in through side holes
  • Drain tile entering the pit below floor level
  • A discharge pipe that leaves the house and ends in the yard
  • No smell, because the water is groundwater

What it will never do

  • It cannot handle anything from a toilet, sink or shower
  • It does nothing about water backing up out of a floor drain
  • It cannot fix seepage entering above the footing

What does an ejector pump do, and who fixes it?

An ejector pump exists because plumbing below the sewer line cannot drain by gravity. It handles waste, and it belongs to a licensed plumber from start to finish.

We do not install or service these. Knowing how they work is still the fastest way to identify yours.

  1. Below-grade fixtures drain into a basin

    A basement toilet, shower, utility sink or washing machine sits lower than the building sewer leaving the house. Their waste lines run to a basin sunk in the floor instead of out to the street.

  2. The basin is sealed and vented

    Because the contents are sewage, the lid is gasketed and bolted down and a vent pipe runs up through the house. That vent is the single clearest way to tell an ejector basin from a sump pit across the room.

  3. The pump passes or grinds solids

    An ejector is built to move solids and paper, which a groundwater pump is not. A grinder version cuts them first. Either way the internals are heavier and the failure modes are different.

  4. It lifts waste to the sewer line

    When the float rises, the pump pushes the contents up through a check valve into the building sewer above it, where gravity takes over again and it leaves the house the normal way.

  5. It fails as a plumbing emergency

    A dead ejector means waste has nowhere to go, so it backs into the basement fixtures. That is a licensed plumber, immediately. There is no version of that repair that a waterproofing crew should be touching.

Signs you are looking at an ejector basin

  • A bolted or gasketed lid that does not lift off by hand
  • A vertical vent pipe rising out of the lid
  • Plumbing lines entering the basin above floor level
  • It runs after a basement toilet flushes or the washer drains

What it will never do

  • It does not remove groundwater from around your foundation
  • It cannot stop seepage at the cove joint or a wall crack
  • A sewer odor near it means a seal or vent issue for a plumber

How do I tell which pit is which?

You can settle this in about a minute standing in the basement, without opening anything. Work down the list until something rules one out.

One overlap worth knowing: water rising out of a floor drain is neither pump. That is the municipal sewer pushing back into the house, and it is a different problem entirely. Sewer backup versus seepage walks through the difference.

Which Chicago houses have both?

Whether a basement holds one pit or two comes down to when the house was built and what somebody added down there afterward.

Pre-war bungalows and two-flats

Built with no basement plumbing at all. A half bath added in the seventies brought in an ejector, and a wet spring somewhere along the way brought in a sump, so the two pits are decades apart in age.

Post-war block ranches

Usually a laundry tub and floor drain only, which drain by gravity. Many of these houses have a sump and nothing else, so any pump you find in the floor is the groundwater one.

1980s and 90s poured basements

Often built with a basement bath rough-in that got finished later. Both pits then sit near the same corner of the mechanical room, matching lids, no labels, and nobody remembers which is which.

Perimeter drainage to a sump as standard, plus an ejector basin wherever the plan put a lower-level bath. These are the easiest to tell apart, because the ejector lid is clearly bolted down.

We do not quote ejector pumps, because we do not install them and publishing a number for work we do not perform would be dishonest. Ask a licensed plumber for that one. Everything on the groundwater side is priced from the ranges on our pricing page, the same in all seven counties.

If the pump that stopped is under a bolted lid with a vent pipe, stop reading and call a licensed plumber. Waste with nowhere to go backs into the lowest fixture in the house, and that clock runs fast.

That is the sewer coming back at you, not groundwater coming in. No sump, no drain tile and no waterproofing system will change it, and the fix is often a backflow device. Confirm which one you have first.

Before anyone quotes a bigger pump, look at where your downspouts end. Correcting extensions and grading runs $600 to $2,500 and often halves how hard the pit works. Downspout extensions covers what that involves.

Questions homeowners ask about the two pumps

Can one pump do both jobs?

No, and combining them is a serious mistake. A sump pump is not built to pass solids and will jam on them. More importantly, tying waste into a sump means sewage leaves through the discharge line into your yard, which no municipality in Illinois permits. The two systems stay separate, with separate pits, separate pumps and separate discharge paths, for both mechanical and public health reasons.

Why does my basement have two pits?

Because your house has plumbing below the level of the sewer line leaving it, plus groundwater that has to be managed. The ejector basin serves the basement bathroom or laundry, and the sump pit serves the drain tile around the foundation. This is completely normal in Chicago, where finished lower levels and deep basements are common, and it does not mean anything is wrong.

My pump is running but the basement is still wet. Which one is it?

Look at where the water is. Clean water spreading from the wall or the floor and wall joint is groundwater, which is the sump side and our work. Water coming up out of a floor drain or backing into a basement shower is the drain side, which is a plumber. If the wet area is nowhere near either pit, the source is more likely a wall crack or a window well than any pump.

Does an ejector pump need a battery backup?

Ask your plumber, because it is their system and their recommendation to make. What we will say is that the logic is not the same as it is for a sump. A sump backup exists because storms take out power at the exact moment groundwater peaks. An ejector only runs when someone in the house uses a fixture, and during an outage that use can usually be paused for a few hours.

How long does an ejector pump last?

Roughly the same seven to ten year window as a sump pump, though usage patterns differ enormously between a guest bath used twice a year and a full basement apartment. Since we do not service them, treat that as general context rather than a recommendation. Your plumber can tell you what yours has left, and they are the right person to schedule the replacement.

Who do I call if I genuinely cannot tell?

Once you have identified the groundwater pit, the next question is whether the system feeding it is doing its job. Pit depth, the drain tile running into it, the check valve and the discharge route all determine how much water the pump can actually clear in an hour, and a pump matched to the wrong load runs itself into an early grave.
