The quick answer
Nearly every dead sump pump traces to one of five things: no power at the outlet, a float that cannot move, an impeller jammed with silt, a blocked or frozen discharge line, or a motor at the end of its life. Check the outlet first, because it is free and it is often the answer.
Which one you have depends less on luck than on how old the pump is and what is in your pit. A three-year-old pump in a lidded crock rarely dies of mechanical causes, so start at the electrical end. A twelve-year-old pump in an open pit full of gravel dust has earned the benefit of the doubt in the other direction. What should you check first when the sump pump stops working?
Do these in sequence. Unplug the pump before you put a hand anywhere near the pit, and stop as soon as one of them explains the problem.
- Confirm the outlet is live. Plug a lamp or a phone charger into the same receptacle. If nothing happens, look for a tripped GFCI button on that outlet, on another outlet nearby, or in the garage, and check the breaker panel. A surprising share of emergency calls end here.
- Look at the plug itself. Many pumps use a piggyback plug where the float cord sits between the pump cord and the wall. If it has worked loose, the pump has power but never gets the signal to start.
- Free the float. Reach in and lift the float by hand. If the pump fires, the float was pinned against the crock wall, the discharge pipe or the pump body, and repositioning it fixes today’s problem.
- Listen for a hum. A pump that hums but moves no water usually has a jammed impeller or an airlock. Both are fixable, and neither means the motor is dead.
- Check the discharge outside. Walk out to where the pipe ends. Ice, mulch, a crushed section or a wasp nest in the outlet all stop the water while the pump keeps trying. In winter this is the first place we look.
- Look at the water in the pit. Silt, gravel and drywall dust settle to the bottom and pack the intake screen and impeller housing, especially in pits with no lid.

Why do sump pumps quit during the storm instead of before it?
Because a sump pump does not fail on the day it breaks. It fails on the day it is asked to work. For most of the year a pump in the Chicago area handles a few gentle cycles a week, and a worn bearing, a sticky switch or a half-clogged intake never shows itself at that pace. Then a storm parks over the county, the pit demands hours of continuous duty, and every one of those weaknesses surfaces inside the first hour.
Our clay soil sets the trap. Glacial clay carries fine silt in suspension, and every gallon that reaches your pit brings some of it along. That silt settles into the bottom of the crock, packs around the intake and eventually keeps the impeller from turning freely, which is exactly why a lid and a periodic cleanout matter more here than in sandier parts of the country. Add the outage risk, since the storms that flood basements are the same ones that take down the lines, and you have two independent failures aiming at the same hour. Winter has its own version. A discharge line that ices over turns the pump into a motor pushing against a closed pipe, and it will trip its own thermal protection rather than move a drop. One honest note on repair versus replace. Rebuilding an aging pump to save a few hundred dollars puts the same tired motor back in the same pit, and it fails again on the next storm, which is the only night it matters. After enough basements you can guess the cause from the vintage of the house before you touch anything.
Pre-war bungalows and two-flats
Open pits, no lids, and decades of workshop dust, coal grit and gravel in the bottom of the crock. Silt and debris failures dominate here. The wiring is the other half of the story: a pump on an extension cord run across the floor to the only outlet on that wall is something we still find every week in Berwyn and the surrounding bungalow belt. Extension cords work loose, get kicked, and take the pump offline without leaving any evidence that anything happened.
Post-war block ranches
The pump is often sharing a circuit with the laundry, the freezer or the garage, so the failure is frequently a tripped GFCI rather than anything wrong with the pump at all. We have pulled up to houses with two inches of standing water and fixed the problem by pressing a button. It is a good day for the homeowner and a lousy invoice for us, and we would still rather do it that way.
1980s and 90s poured walls
Plenty of these homes still run the pump the builder installed, which means a unit that has been cycling for decades under a finished basement. Switches go before motors in this group. The failure often looks intermittent first: the pump misses a cycle, the water sits a little higher than usual, someone bumps the float and it runs again. Treat that as the warning it is, because the next miss tends to happen during a storm.
Newer subdivision homes
High water tables mean high duty cycles, and high duty cycles wear the switch long before the motor. A pump that has cycled every few minutes for five wet springs has done more starts than a pump twice its age in a dry house. These homes also tend to have a single pump doing all the work, so when it stops, the water rises immediately with nothing to slow it down.
When can you fix this yourself, and when is it not the pump?

The outlet was the problem. A reset GFCI, a reseated piggyback plug or a breaker back on solves this at no cost. Once it runs again, put a note in your phone to look at that receptacle every spring, and get the pump off any extension cord permanently.
The pump is young and the switch is the failure. On many units the float switch is a serviceable part. If yours is only a few years old, look up its model warranty before you buy anything, because the manufacturer may still cover it.

The water is coming up the floor drain, not the pit. A working sump pump cannot stop a sewer surcharge, and neither can a new one. Questions homeowners ask when the pump quits
My sump pump hums but does not move any water. What does that mean?
Usually a jammed impeller or an airlock. Silt, pea gravel or a stray piece of debris can wedge the impeller so the motor energizes without turning, which produces exactly that hum. An airlock is the other candidate: trapped air below the check valve leaves the pump spinning against a bubble instead of water. Unplug it, clear the intake and check the weep hole. If it hums again after that, the motor is telling you it is done.
Does a tripped GFCI mean the pump is bad?
Not by itself. Damp basement air, an aging receptacle or another appliance on the same circuit can all trip a GFCI while the pump is perfectly healthy. What matters is what happens next. If it resets and the pump runs normally, you had a nuisance trip. If it trips again as soon as the motor starts, the pump is leaking current and should be replaced rather than reset over and over, since repeat trips on a motor circuit are a real electrical fault and not a quirk.
Can I use a shop vac or a portable pump until the new one is installed?
For a short stretch, yes, and it beats watching the water rise. A wet vac handles a slow leak if somebody is there to empty it, and a utility pump with a garden hose will hold a pit that is filling steadily. Both need a person present, which is the limitation: neither runs while you sleep or work. Treat them as a bridge measure for a day, not as a plan for the season.
Can a power outage or a surge kill a sump pump?
An outage by itself does not harm the pump, it just stops it, and the unit normally restarts when the power returns. Surges are a different matter. The spike that arrives when service comes back on can damage the switch electronics on pumps that have them, which is why a pump that worked before a storm and refuses afterward is worth testing rather than assuming. Plug it into a known live outlet before you conclude anything, since the receptacle may be what the surge took out.
