Why do Illinois houses need leveling at all?

The slope is old and has stopped moving. A hundred-year-old bungalow floor that dips a bit toward the middle and has looked exactly that way since the current owner bought it in 1998 is a settled house, not a settling one. Tape a card across a wall crack, mark the edges with a pencil, and check it through one full freeze and one dry summer. Nothing moves, nothing needs buying.
The real problem is water at the post base. If a column is rotting because the basement floods every spring, replacing the column and leaving the water alone buys you the same failure again on a longer timeline.
